Ingrown hairs – What causes them and how to treat them

I’m sure most of us have had clients suffering from an ingrown hair in for treatment at some point. They aren’t very nice and they’re a bit uncomfortable. We have a few ways to prevent and even solve this issue. First, let’s take a look at what they are and what causes them.

What is an ingrown hair?

An ingrown hair is a hair which has curled in on itself and grown back under the skin surface. They happen when a hair follicle gets clogged stopping the hair from growing out of the follicle. The hair is forced sideways growing into the skin. The result is usually a raised red spot which can be itchy and sore and can, on occasion, turn into a pus-filled sore

Who gets them?

Anyone can get them but people with coarse or curly hair are more susceptible. Areas that people shave are also more likely to see ingrown hairs; beards, legs, armpits and pubic areas.

What can we do to help?

Exfoliate. A clogged hair follicle caused by a build up of dead skin cells can be rectified with exfoliation to remove the dead skin.

Microdermabrasion

For men, a treatment like microdermabrasion will exfoliate the dead skin build up that might be present around the hair follicle. That rough, bumpy feeling is buffed away leaving soft smooth skin and reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs. Between treatments, clients should use an at-home exfoliant to prevent any build up. If you would like to offer SkinBsae microdermabrasion treatments in your business, find out more here.

Intense Pulsed Light

Women suffering from irritated skin on the bikini line will also benefit from a course of microdermabrasion. To really get rid of the problem once and for all we recommend a course of SkinBase IPL permanent hair reduction. With this treatment, hairs will be permanently removed.  Any returning hairs will be much finer and softer than before. Those pesky red bumps will be a distant memory and your client will be hair free too! Bonus.
