The importance of continued training and development in every business is so important – including yours! With the high level of competition in the beauty industry, it’s pivotal that your business stands out from the crowd. So let’s take a look at how proper training can achieve long term business success.

Be an Expert in Your Field 

Weaknesses crop up everywhere, and from time to time, a weakness can break a business. Whether you run solo within your company or have staff who work for you, each and every employee of your business must be the best they can be in their field. For example, if you specialise in facials, make sure you’re up-to-date and certified. Keep on top of what’s changing and get into the habit of knowing if there are any new and improved techniques being introduced. Always be on the lookout for courses that can help you be an expert in your field. If you are Level 3 qualified, consider doing a Level 4 qualification to give you that extra knowledge to set yourself apart from the competition.

Use your industry knowledge to advise clients about the treatments that will benefit them and their skin type. Remember, you’re the expert! Both potential (and existing clients) are more likely to use your services if you are confident in the fact that you are the best at what you do.

Consider Branching Out

Depending on what size of business you have, and if you have employees who specialise in certain treatments, you may want to consider broadening your horizons and learning some new skills. Being able to turn your hand to more treatments is excellent for you and great for the customer. By learning new skills, you’re literally opening the door for potential new clients to come in and let you work your magic on them. Choose treatments that complement each other well to help you sell more. For example, for treating stretch marks microdermabrasion is very effective performed before Radio Frequency. An Olaplex treatment is a great upsell for a hairdresser. Talk about how good cuticle oil is to your nail clients then have it there to retail at your till area. You could even update your retail area as clients are coming in, tailored offerings.

Keep Ahead of the Game

As mentioned already, the competition within the beauty industry is HUGE. Most cities have upwards of 10 of the same businesses, offering the same treatments, at very similar prices. This can make it incredibly difficult to obtain new clients and can see loyal clients move on to try other businesses for whatever reason.

By keeping an eye on what the current trends are, you can stay ahead of the competition. Look at what big salons or beauty businesses are doing in larger cities and even in other countries. Test out the product yourself if you have to but stay ahead of the game by researching and knowing what’s around the corner. If you’re able to predict the market, you’ll make a good name as being a business that’s in the know – it’s all about forward-thinking.

Continuous and professional development is a choice that you make. Unfortunately, there are a lot of individuals out there who haven’t taken on any training since they left college which stifles their productive and creative growth and will also, over time, make them outdated and not on trend. But if you train and develop the skills you have, it will help you build credibility and confidence with not only yourself but your clients, too.

Yes, much like with anything, there are some drawbacks to training from an employer’s perspective. Development opportunities can be expensive and some employees may also miss out on work time while attending training sessions or courses. Despite the potential drawbacks, training and development provide both the company as a whole and the individual employees with benefits that make the cost and time a worthwhile investment and presents a prime opportunity to expand the knowledge base of all employees in order to drive the business forward.
